Lawrence Anthony Billboard

I've been in Egypt the last few weeks, but now I'm back I shall share this.

Exciting mainly in that this is the first finished job I have seen 'out in the world' since I started my new job. It was quite a simple template design, and most of my work was in rendering up the box full of vouchers they liked so much they used twice.

Land Rover 60th Anniversary Book

This was a pitch for a book with a big foldout timeline to celebrate Land Rover's 60th Anniversary. It was going to chart all the years from production to now, with pictures of all the models and facts and stats etc. Land Rover have decided to do their own coffee table type book in house, because everyone and their gran has a 60th Anniversary idea. They really like ours and in fact approached us to do it, but have decided they can't afford it. Anyhow, here's the concepts for it!

The Social Underclass at Play

I had to sit opposite some very stupid people on the Hammersmith & City line in London this time last week. Their conversation was endless, and quite frustrating.

More Journals

Some more assorted journal covers and variations.

Journal of Power

Here's the beginning of what I hope to be a more regular update on the day-to-day stuff I've been putting out for Wheeler & Porter. One of our main clients is Taylor & Francis, who are a big worldwide publisher of assorted academic journals. The covers for these can be quite a challenge, as they need to, of course, look good, but at the same time have a very heavy dose of sober in the mix. These first two are slightly less sober and, of course, more exciting. Sober is tough.

LeSEDS Logo

A project I've been working on for the last month, a logo for the Leicester University branch of SEDS (Students for the Exploration and Development of Space). The client wanted the emphasis to be on the links the group has with industry, and to emphasise some of the more important projects the group takes part in, like satellite construction. The first two are the final designs they chose (one for black backgrounds, another for white), but I've also included a page of my variations on the theme so you can get a bit of an idea of how I worked with the concept.

New Work Soon!

I've been working almost two months now at a Graphic Design agency in Banbury, Oxfordshire, called Wheeler & Porter. There's several jobs I've done/am doing there that I'd like to share with you, once I've cleared it with the boss!

An Old Idea

Some old stuff I dug up on my hard drive the other day. Some concepts for a light-hearted book about the Garden of Eden. I'm still quite happy with the graphic colour-coded character thing I had going on here, even though these are a bit rough and the typography makes me cringe a little.

Online Comic Submissions

I've been a little busy recently; my show in London, sorting out and getting a design job (woo!) then graduating, then my sisters graduation, and many other things, meaning I've not had a lot of time for design/illustration stuff.

What I have been working on is a few submissions for an online comic that came about through one of my shows. The chap organising it sent me a sample script and I produced a few sample panels for him to look at. I'm less happy with some of these ones than others (the outside one with the van, mainly) but I did a least learn quite a good way to letter.

Me vs London Traffic

A few weeks back, I had a day out in London. While there, I stupidly stepped out in front of traffic I didn't see. Somewhat haunted by my near death experience, I decided to have a go at making a comic about it as an attempt to exercise the experience.

Final digital version.
Neater draft in inks.

First draft in pencil.

My near incomprehensble thumbnails.

Apollo Booklet

One of my final major projects on my degree, a booklet for an exhibition about Apollo 12. A great big typography extravaganza, which taught me just how much of a dark art laying out lots of text really is.

Character sketch warm up

So I've been thinking about making attempts to improve my life drawings skills for a while now, so I figured; what better time! I've wanted to be able to catch the 'essence' of peoples personalities with a few simple lines for many many years. So I took some pictures of my friends and went to work. See if you can guess who's who! Ha! I've got a long way to go, but it's the starting that's important. You can also chart my progress through the night on this one sheet; the drawings go from appalling to a bit better as I warm up, then back to crappy as I get tired.

Testing, testing

My end of year exhibition is up, and my mark is being decided AS I TYPE (well, perhaps not as it's quite late in the evening). This is where I'll put up work in a hopefully not futile attempt to keep myself sane now I have no constant demanding uni work to do.

Well, I've set this thing up now. I suppose I'll start using it properly soon!
